Makeup Artist Spotlight: Dianne Murphy

Marisa Robinson Makeup Artist MUA Spotlight Dianne Murphy

As a makeup artist I am constantly inspired by the amount of talent in Australia and around the globe! In my 'Makeup Artist Spotlight' series I want to share these artists with you and celebrate their journey, accomplishments and why they inspire me.

In this post allow me to introduce Australian Hair and Makeup Artist Dianne Murphy. I had the pleasure of meeting Dianne through college and she is a fine example of someone who has taken the bull by the horns and is kicking ass in the industry!

When did you first realize you wanted to be a makeup artist?
I grew up in musical theatre so I have been around makeup all my life. However I didn't realise or appreciate the full impact of personal makeup until I started dressing as a pinup 4-5 years ago. I love how transformative hair and makeup is and decided to follow my dream career and abandon my job as a customer service rep (it was making me miserable!).

How long have you been working in the industry?
Professionally about 18 months.

Which makeup style is your forte?
Pinup hair styling/makeup is my passion for sure! But I love dabbling in sfx and body painting.

What's the most valuable lesson you've learnt on the job?
Be punctual, attentive, reliable.

Most memorable / favourite makeup job you've worked on?
There have been a few film/tv jobs that have been so much fun but the most memorable was doing hair/makeup for Buzz Aldrin and Ray Martin for 'An evening with Buzz Aldrin' at the State Theatre last year. Buzz and Ray were lovely and Buzz has had such an amazing life.

Top 5 products in your kit you'd be lost without.
1. Ben Nye Neutral Palette
2. Lorac Pro Palette
3. MAC Studio Fix Foundations
4. Embryolisse Creme Hydratante a L’Orange
5. MAC gel eyeliner.

MUA you admire
Ve Neill. She worked in sfx makeup in film when not many women were and did amazing work.

If you weren't doing makeup you'd be...
Probably in customer service still and miserable.

What advice would you give to someone looking to become a MUA?
Learn as much as you can, work really hard, never expect anything to be given to you, and never give up!
