Blogger Spotlight Series: Meet Michelle of Lab Muffin Beauty + Science
Welcome to my new series: Blogger Spotlight where I profile my favourite beauty bloggers and get to know them, their blogging journey, fave products and advice for budding bloggers through a quick Q&A.
In this edition of Beauty Blogger Spotlight I am featuring a gorgeous girl who I learn something new from literally everyday! She is super smart, supportive and I love catching up with her at beauty events! Meet the lovely Michelle of Lab Muffin Beauty and Science.
WHAT'S THE NAME OF YOUR BLOG AND IS THERE A STORY BEHIND THE NAME?
My blog is called Lab Muffin. The name comes from the fact I was working on my PhD in a chemistry lab, and my nickname is Muffin. I didn't really think very hard about the name, and sort of regret it now, but it's stuck and I think it might be too late to change!
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN BLOGGING?
Since December 2011 - so a little over 5 years.
WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU'RE NOT BLOGGING?
I teach chemistry at a tutoring college full time as my day job, which means I spend a lot of time writing teaching materials and playing around with experiments. I also pole dance as a hobby.
HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR BLOGGING CAREER TO DATE
I'm a massive nerd, so I get very excited when I get referenced in nerdy places! There's an image of mine in a textbook on biological membranes, and I've been referenced in a feminist media studies book. One of my articles is also in an American Chemical Society teacher guide. I also love it when people I admire mention my blog. Two particular highlights were when British Beauty Blogger and The Beauty Brains wrote nice things about me! I also saw the makers of Olaplex mention that they'd read my article on Olaplex which was pretty cool. There's also a really talented science comic artist who sometimes draws my tweets!
TOP 5 MAKEUP / BEAUTY PRODUCTS YOU'D BE LOST WITHOUT
Eyelash curler - I have straight stubbly Asian lashes so they're invisible without a curler.
NIOD Photography Fluid - makes my face look glowy and magnificent
Girlee Cosmetics Eyeliner Pencil - I've been using this for years and haven't found anything better. This pencil does not transfer, but it's very easy to blend!
The Face Shop Design My Brow pencil in grey-brown - I can't find the right colour eyebrow products from Western brands so I have to import this from Korea. It's less than $5 which is awesome too!
Williamspro Zero Powder - My skin is quite oily so I need a good setting powder otherwise I go greasy very quickly. This is the best I've used so far!
YOUR SKINCARE SAVIOURS
Paula's Choice 2% BHA Liquid - controls my pore situation so well. I started using it in 2010 and I still haven't found anything that works better.
Ultraceuticals Ultra UV Protective Daily Moisturiser SPF 50+ Mattifying - the best sunscreen formula I've ever used, no greasiness and it's very easy to apply the right amount
Rose hip oil - Makes my skin super happy and smooth. It's the product that got me into skincare.
BLOGS YOU LOVE TO READ + FOLLOW
There are a lot! I really like blogs that have really in-depth posts. My faves are currently Kind of Stephen, the Snailcast crew (50 Shades of Snail, Snow White & the Asian Pear, Holy Snails, Fanserviced-B), Colin's Beauty Pages, The Beauty Brains, Point of Interest, FutureDerm, Paula's Choice and Beautiful With Brains. I also read a lot of science blogs like Science-Based Medicine and Authority Nutrition. On the less nerdy side of things, I really like Shannon's Kitchen! She's sweary, smart and good at cooking. I want her to be my best friend. I also love my Aussie beauty crew, and unfortunately I'm sure I'll forget some people and I apologise in advance - you, Lily Not Louise, Aussie Beauty Talk, Tried and Tested, Lipstick and Linguine, Teacup of Makeup, Rachel Beauty Style, Skincare Blogger, Haute Flashes, Beautyholics Anonymous, The Plastic Diaries, Hair Romance... the list is very long!
BLOGGERS YOU ADMIRE
Anyone with a consistent posting schedule and amazing photographs. I don't know how you do it!
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE LOOKING TO BECOME A BEAUTY BLOGGER
Try to find a point of difference. Don't try to be all things to all people - you won't stand out that way. Work out what you're good at and love doing, and stick with it.
